Course Outline

Sociology is the study of contemporary society. It explores the reasons behind patterns and trends in society, and seeks to understand a range of different ways these trends can be interpreted. The main theoretical perspectives you will examine in this course are Functionalism, Marxism, Feminism, Social Action theory, the New Right and Post Modernism.

Throughout the course there is a strong focus on social research methods. There is also a heavy emphasis on developing critical thinking skills, evaluation of evidence, and constructing a well reasoned argument.

Unit 2:  Education; Sociological Methods

A2

Unit3 :  Beliefs in Society

Unit 4:  Crime and Deviance; Theory and Method

Entry Requirements

6 GCSEs Grade A* to C including Mathematics and a Grade B in English Language.

Assessment

100% modular examination. Units 1 and 3 are examined in January and units 2 and 4 are examined in June.

Progression

The emphasis on research methods in Sociology will develop your critical and analytical skills and so is a very useful entry qualification for a wide range of careers such as the law, police work, forensics, politics, education, the media, social research or journalism.
